Minnesoter by the Dandy Warhols

The big question is:  will Tucker learn from the abysmal performance at Washington, get his head out of his butt and teach the corners how to play defense?  Will he again have CBs on 15 yard cushions and give Minnesoter everything they want in the passing game?  Will there be a pass rush, or any aggression at all from the defense? The defense needs to make some stops, instead of giving up chunks of yardage ad nauseum.

Can the offensive line block? The offense needs to show up early in this game, and not spot Minny a 22-point lead, like last week.  Need some balance on offense and make some holes for Berger and Broussard.  Wow, writing this, sounds like the ES is asking for MSU to change its entire approach and execution... YES, I AM.

Minnesoter is a good test at 3-0, and a win by either will put them in the top 25.

This game feels like a toss up.  It all comes down to mental preparedness and execution.  And, that goes for coach Tuck as well as the players.  There's been some rain this morning, so expect a wet track... but it should be clear for the fans.  The ES is gonna be a homer...

Here we go. Crunchy's is a useful place for foaming at the mouth. What shall thy say?  Minnesota is seeking its first win against the Spartans since 2009 and its first win against an AP-ranked Michigan State team since 1962.  Minnesoter has too many lakes, too much cold... but it hain't snow today.  It's to be a monsoon.  The ES don't know anything about Minnesota (link here).  Got nothing.

Predictions:
  • Mike Valenti: MSU, but "I'll take the points (Minny)"
  • Mark Feather: 27-21 MSU
  • Dianne DuBay Ford: No prediction but I’ll be there!!
  • Debbie Chang: 24-16 MSU
  • Paul Anders: 35-0 MSU
  • Chris Zech: 31-17 MSU... After further consideration of tomorrow’s potential monsoon, I am revising my prediction to: MSU 20 Gophers 7
  • Steve Sundeen: 34-10 MSU
  • Ronnie Maxedon: 24-17 msu
  • Jeremy Hernandez: MSU in a blowout. Minny is one dimensional imo, all run. MSU stops the gopher run attack and they win.
  • RGM3: 24-14. Those mother f*ers don’t stand a chance
  • Chris Carter: Ok...I've been way off the last two weeks...thankfully so...this one I hope to get right...MSU 24 Minny 10
  • Keith Cambier: Tougher than it should be, 12-10 green.
  • Big Joe and Phantom 309: 10-9 MSU
  • Scott Hirko: Anyone have 11-5?
  • Dave Smigielski in the rain: 17-3
  • Chris Hock: we should have been at the cal game tonight. It's a good one.

Some photos from Saturday:

Please recycle!  Final score, 14-3

Actually, a beautiful day

ES, Big Bob, and Sloth:

 Going in to... SCORE!

#2 Buckeyes favored by 6 over #9 Spartans; weird stats on 14-3 slaying of Gophers

Congrats to our Michigan State Spartans, B1G Legends Champs in two of the last three years.  MSU is now ranked #9/#10 in the land after sweeping through the Big Ten undefeated, 8-0, winning every conference game by more than 10 points.  The Big Green's 14-3 victory over Minnesota (see thoughts from ES below) sets up for a nice B1G championship game against #2 Ohio State - the best offense in the conference vs the best defense.  And we all know, defense wins championships!

Ohio State is favored by 6 over Michigan State.  This is a Buckeye team that needed a boneheaded call for a 2 point conversion by Brady Hoke to beat Michigan after giving up 41 points.  As the ES recalls, the Spartans gave up just 6 points to the Wolvies and beat them by 23 points.

Check out the coaches poll, as the Spartans creep up to #9.   Can't wait to see the BCS rankings this evening... ES expects a #9 ranking by the computers.

THOUGHTS ON SPARTANS VS GOPHERS:

Two stats that really pop out from the game yesterday:  1) Minnesota getting just 249 yards (and 124 on the ground) but needing nearly 39 minutes to do it.  That's a lot of time for very few yards.  It was the only time this year Michigan State lost the time of possession battle.  What it tells the ES is the Spartan defense bent but didn't break; and actually stiffened near the red zone.  Minny finished 1-3 in the redzone.  And, the Spartans had 11 tackles for loss, including 4 sacks on the day.  Wow.  2) MSU 0-8 on third downs.  A surprising stat that needs to be improved if the Spartans are to defeat Ohio State.

Yesterday, Michigan State played probably the best team on its schedule this season.  The Gophers are an impressive squad, and David Cobb, who gained 101 yards on 27 carries (3.7 per carry) was the best RB the Spartans have faced all year.  Good timing as take on the Buckeyes!

WOW! What a day for college football, Big Green style!!!!

Today is unbelievable, like watching Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Up and down and all around, what a ride.

Michigan State whipped Minnesota, 14-3 today.  But, it is everything else across the nation that is giving #11 MSU a chance to really move into a solid standing.  '

First off, Ohio State needed a bone-headed call by Michigan coach Brady Hoke at the end of the game to win, 42-41 (umm, State gave up just 6 points to the Wolvies).  This makes the ES felling even better about our chances in the B1G Title game next week.  If OSU is favored by more than 3 points, the ES will eat his socks.

And, even if we lose (the Big Green won't), the BCS bid for Big Ten's second place team grew brighter with a #15 Wisky loss to Penn State today - at home!   Wow, that was a shocker if the ES ever saw.

#1 Alabama lost to #4 Auburn on a 109.75-yard FG return on the last play of the game, something that even the $6 million man should know:  PREPARE YOUR TEAM for returns.  Saban's look was fantastic at the end of the game:  looked like he was slapped in the face.  Can't happen enough to the former Spartan coach.

Elsewhere, the ES is giddy.  The ES is rooting for #21 Texas A&M is at #5 Mizzou; #6 Clemson is at #10 SoCarolina, one of them will lose; #25 ND is at #8 Stanford - the Big Green can really get a lift from an Irish win at the Trees; and, Rich Rod's Zona is at #12 Ariz State, with a loss to the Devils providing more distance between the Big Green and other BCS contenders.

THIS IS THE YEAR!!!!!

ES Game Day: Spartans to shutout surprising Gophers

#11/11 Michigan State Spartans (10-1, 7-0) vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-3, 4-3)
Time:  12 pm ET

TV: BTN
Line: MSU by 17

Predictions:
  • The ES has scoured the internet for the past two days, and cannot find one single prediction from the state of Minnesota on the Gophers vs Spartans football game.  How pathetic for the Land 'O Lakes.
  • BTN.com: Merriman, MSU 34-10; Bardo, MIN 21-20; Dienhart, MSU 37-3; Yarina, MSU 24-7
  • CFN/Scout.com:  MSU 27-10

ES sez:

What A Great Dayyy Forrr Footballlll!!!!  It will be a cold affair, but some sun will show up to help bring the temps to just above freezing.

This is one of the more interesting games of the season.  Minnesota's 8-3 record is among the greatest surprises in college football.  But, let's look more closely at common opponents... which the performance clearly favors the Spartans.  Minny's season was headlined with a 34-23 win at Nebraska.  But, the 'Huskers were whipped by Iowa today (we whipped both the Corn, 41-28, and Iowa, 23-7, on the road).  The Gophers slipped past Northwestern by 3 (who we killed in Chicago by 25 points), and snaked past Indiana by 3 (who we also hammered by 17 pts).   And, of course, the big difference - Minny lost to Michigan by 29 points; we absolutely annihilated the Wolverines by 23.

Minny off vs Spartan def:  Minnesota's offense has quietly performed very well on the ground, with David Cobb running for more than 1,000 yards so far; but, his most recent peformance of 17 carries for 68 yards vs Wisconsin in more likely to be similar to what he will expect at Michigan State and the nations' best rush defense giving up just 59.4 yards per game.  Minnesota will likely be forced into a pass game, which is already ranked just #116 in the nation at 154 yards per game.

QB Phillip Nelson has a 9 TD vs 4 INT ratio, and completing 53% of his passes.   The Spartans are giving up just 177 yards per game, ranked #9 in the nation.  The Big Green has the best secondary in the land with Darqueze Dennard (4 INT, 7 PBUs), Kurtis Drummond (4 INTs, 5 PBUs), Trae Waynes (5 PBUs).  To boot, the Spartans' sport a nice pass rush with Denicos Allen, Shalique Calhoun, and Marcus Rush adding to 25 sacks.

Spartan off vs Minny def: The Gopher defense is giving up a reasonable 376 yards per game, ranked #46 in the nation. They are giving up 150 yards on the ground per game, and another 220 through the air per game.  These are respectable against respectable opponents. But, Minnesota's defense doesn't seem to work well against tough, grinding teams like Michigan State, with tough defenses.  Let's look at a comparable opponent to Michigan State on the road - such as last week's Gopher stint at Wisconsin:

  WIS  MINN
1st Downs1811
Total Yards324185
Passing12783
Rushing197102
Penalties2-255-26
3rd Down Conversions4-163-13
4th Down Conversions1-21-3
Turnovers13
Possession35:1124:49

Minny couldn't get over the hump; just 185 total yards, and just 82 through the air.  More importantly: three stats stand out.  3-13 third downs (23%), an 11-minute TOP advantage to Wisky, and a 3-1 turnover advantage to Wisky.  This means that Wisconsin controlled the game on both sides of the ball, including on offense.

To that end, I see a similar effort out of Michigan State and the Spartans' ability to run the ball with success. To add to Spartan RB Jeremy Langford's 1,000 yard season, Michigan State is surging with its pass game, averaging 199 yards per game, but coming off a career-best 293 yards out of QB Connor Cook in a frozen, windy tundra at Northwestern.  If anything, MSU has turned out to have the most balanced offense, with the least mistakes, of any in the Big Ten conference.  Give Spartan receivers credit for making big plays in recent weeks:

at Northwestern -  (rec, yds, TD, long)
Lippett, Tony 3 64 0 48
Price, Josiah 3 35 1 15
Fowler, Bennie 2 99 1 87

at Nebraska -
Lippett, Tony 4 67 0 34
Kings, M. 3 37 0 17
Fowler, Bennie 2 29 0 16
Mumphery, Keith 1 27 1 27

vs Michigan -
Fowler, Bennie 6 75 1 25
Lippett, Tony 5 62 0 21
Kings, M. 2 14 0 10

And, in seven games of Big Ten play, Connor Cook is an impressive, 61% completion percentage (124 of 203), with 11 TDs, 3 INTs, 1,565 yards.  Wow.

Special teams:  Minny's kicker Chris Hawthorne has hit on 12 of 15 FGs, 4-of-5 from 40-49, but 0-fer-2 from 50 out.  Their punter, Peter Mortell, has kicked 17 of 51 inside the 20, with a long of 62 yards. Our kicker, Michael Geiger, has hit 12 of 13 FGs, including 6-of-6 from beyond 40.  Sparty's Mike Sadler  should win the award for the best punter in the nation. 27 of his 59 kicks have been placed inside the 20, with a long of 69.  A big time advantage to the Spartans here

History: Since the Doctor showed up, the Spartans have handled the Gophers pretty well. MD has a 3-1 record, including the last three: 31-8 and 31-24 wins at home, and a 26-10 win in Minneapolis last year. The ES hates most of the teams in the Big Ten, but it is tough to dislike the ultimate underdog, of which the Gophers rank near the top because of their disgusting play on the gridiron for most of the last 70 years.  The ES is really rooting for Jerry Kill and his staff; Kill's continued seizures, and how his staff has overcome the situation has been truly inspirational. Further, coaching way the hell up where Bud Grant used to coach, and in an outdoor stadium, is an endorsement of the thick-skinned nature of football.

Final:  ES sez, it is senior day, and watch Max Bullough go out playing ape-shit.  Michigan State 22, Minnesota 0.

Order up your wings: Mich State to B-Dubs Bowl

Looks like 6-6/3-5 MSU will most likely play in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, Dec. 29 in Tempe, Ariz.  The most likely opponent is a Big 12 opponent, 7-4/5-3 Oklahoma State.  Kickoff is slated for 8:15 pm MST (6:15 pm  ET).  This used to be called the Insight Bowl.

MSU vs Minnesota victory = Fire Roushar

FIRE ROUSHAR. PART II.

Congrats to getting to a miserable 6-6 record by beating lowly Minnesota, 26-10.  Michigan State CRUSHED Minnesota 421-96 in total yards, but the play calling on offense and the poor execution by QB Maxwell really made things far more difficult than necessary today. Thanks to LeVeon Bell, and his 266 yards rushing on 35 carries.  Unbelievable performance by Bell.

My first thoughts, on reading the quote from coach Dantonio: ""I thought the game plan to run the football against what they did was very effective. I thought our offensive line played very effectively. It's good to see. ...When you look and you see some of the statistics, you wonder why the game isn't a little bit more lopsided. But you've got to score touchdowns in the red zone. We've kicked a lot of field goals this year, and those are things that we've got to work on as we go into bowl season."

1) You wonder???? Duhhhh.... why in Jesus' name do you PASS the ball on first down early in the game when LeVeon is running through and destroying defenses?  POOR COACHING, outthinking yourselves.  Jesus the ES was yelling through the third quarter trying to figure out what was going on.
2) Then, Maxwell throwing (13-of-29 or 44%) for the game was AWFUL, especially in the Red Zone. He over and under threw receivers all day long, if he didn't throw an INT. Instead of leading the team Maxwell was a liability, not adding ANYTHING.
3) Maxwell did not add value to the team today.
4) THE SPARTAN DEFENSE IS INCREDIBLE.  Holding Minnesota to under 100 total yards, and this offense can barely muster 27 points?  Pathetic, really.

What does all of this mean:

1) Fire Dan Roushar.  His play-calling in this game was as bad as it was all year long.  Throwing the ball on first down when Bell is running wild is.... STUPID. Just total dumb-ass.  I know MSU needs to mix up the play-calling, but not on first down with a sub-par QB in Maxwell.... umm... The ES figures the change in calling plays later in the game was because of Dantonio (or someone Spartan in the stands yelling loud enough for him to hear) demanding that every play be run to LeVeon Bell (funny how it worked). The passing calls were stupid, dumb, moronic the entire game.
2) Bench Andrew Maxwell.  He is awful. Anyone who thinks this guy is any good is high as a kite.  Maxwell can't throw the deep ball well, throws the out pattern short, or just makes very very poor decisions (note the pick-six).  Maxwell can't audible, he telegraphs his passes, and he can't execute in the toughest positions. Mawelll is NOT  a play maker.  He is not.
3) Run Bell.  Just run him.  Find different ways (not a screen play) to get the ball in his hands.  Don't pass the ball.  Just give the goddam thing to him, preferably in the deep-I formation.
4) Where the hell was Dion Sims?  The best receiver on the team, and just one catch for four yards?

I hate this offense because the talent is so great but the coaching and Maxwell's play are AWFUL.  It is really a shame for the defense.

ES Game Day: MSU at Minnesota. 'Tis the end of Roushar, Lord have mercy.

Wow, didn't expect to be here.  The ES is gonna give kudos to both the Sloth and to CHock for their pre-season picks on MSU.  Both guessed 8 wins, and were closest to the prediction of MSU winning AT BEST 6 games in the regular season. CHock called it best: "But we will lose at least one because of inexperience by our rookie QB. Cousins was really, really good and we’ll miss that."

Looks like this is the buffoon's last game - offensive coordinator Dan Roushar may be a goner.  We will all toss some salt over a shoulder, kiss a rabbit's foot, and say a Hail Mary or three that it is the end for the dolt calling the plays for MSU.  When an assistant coach apologizes to the faithful - he's on the chopping block.

That said, tomorrow is THANK GOD the season finale.  This is the final preview of the season.

ES sez:  How dumb can the Spartan coaching staff be?  Is MD trying to instill confidence, or is he instead misdiagnosing his team when he sez: "When we win Saturday -- and I'll say when -- we'll be a 6-6 football team."  Why in god's name would the Doctor give the Gophers bulletin board material, especially after watching the MSU buffoonery on the sidelines and the poor decision-making on the field ALL YEAR LONG?

OK, this is easy.  Let's predict this real quick.  #1 - Is Maxwell starting on Saturday at QB?  YES.  #2 - Is Roushar still the offensive coordinator for MSU on Saturday?  YES.

'Nuff said.  Each will find a way to screw it up in as stupid, maddening, and unnecessary way as possible.  The ES hopes a nor'easter or a massive blizzard from the Yukon swipes over Minneapolis to make life miserable tomorrow.  Lord have mercy.  ES sez:  Minnesota 26, Michigan State 24.

Spartans favored by 8 at Minny? Craziness

OK, so the ES has taken a bit of a respite.  It's tough to get fired up for a vastly underperforming football team on the road at Minnesota.  And, seeing as Michigan State is favored by 8 at Minnesota... well, the Spartans need to make a believer out of the ES this year.  Right now, I'd take Minny straight up.  The game kicks off at 3:30 pm ET on BTN this Saturday.

Sunday, October 30, 2011

Thump. MSU favored by 4 TD over Minnesota. MSU chances for Indy are still good.

Well, that sucked didn't it?  In its 24-3 loss on Saturday, Michigan State just didn't show up on offense vs Nebraska in a repeat of their poor performance against Notre Dame earlier this year. Captain Kirk looked lost in his worst performance of the year, and the offensive play calling was even more lost with a vanilla gameplan sprinkled with gimmicks at consistently the wrong time - just a pathetic, anemic performance by Spartan offense.  The offense never gave the resolute Spartan defense (holding Nebraska to just 270 total yards) a chance.  Hell, the MSU defense played pretty well for much of the day... but ain't no team gonna win many games with its offense scoring 3 points.   The defense showed up, and the offense had a hangover from last week's sensational win over Wisky.  Don't get me wrong -- give the Huskers defense some credit for wearing on and tearing up the Spartan offensive line -> but when the MSU offense needed to make plays, they couldn't make a good call, a sharp pass, a serviceable block, or a damn catch.  The Spartan offense went out of their way to make it easy for the Nebraska defense.

Michigan State dropped to #15 in the AP, #16 in the USA Today, and #17 in the BCS standings. What I can't figure out is how scUM is ranked ahead of the Spartans... again, this is a Michigan team that, yes, beat Notre Dame, but has no other quality wins on its resume.  Sigh, it must be that mystique rearing its ugly head again.

Michigan State ain't out of it folks.  What is amazing is the Wisky loss to Ohio State, the JoePa win, and the Iowa loss to Minny.  If the Spartans can sweep their favorable schedule and Nebraska stumbles on the road at either JoePa or at scUM, MSU could head to the Big Ten title game against JoePa or Wisky. Right now, JoePa has a two game lead over the field in the Leaders division; the Spartans and Huskers are tied at 3-1 atop the Legends.

The Spartans are early 28-pt favorites over Minnesota this upcoming weekend.

Michigan State up to #10 after beating up Minnesota, 31-8

Kind of a yawner, as expected, yesterday as Michigan State's defense dominated Minnesota, 31-8. RB Edwin Baker had a great game, with 4 TDs and 179 yards on the ground at 6.6 yards per clip. Michigan State continues its torrid pace at 9-1 overall. The ES left the game in the middle of the fourth quarter to get to the Harrison Roadhouse, only to watch Indiana's WR drop a game winning TD pass over Iowa. The Roadhouse exploded, just expecting he caught it... only for one minute later for everyone to realize the guy dropped it. The lesson: you can never count on Indiana to do the dirty work...

Michigan State made a big leap, up to #10 in the coaches poll... now a week off to sit back and watch other teams beat each other up.

Michigan State by 24 over Minnesota

Regrouping this week... the Big Green Touchdown Machine is a home 24-pt favorite over the coach-less Minny Gophers on Saturday. A noon kickoff on the Big Ten Network. Wear your thermals, it will be 41 degrees, coming off a night with a forecast of potential snow showers, the first white flakes of the season. It will be nice for the ES to head out on Sunday to Louisiana to accomplish some dissertation data collection in 75-degree weather...

scUM is favored by 3 at home over Illinois...which is a joke. Illinois is the second-best team Michigan State has faced all year. Wait until Denard gets a load of that Illini interior smack-down defense.

Izzo hates the Big Ten Tourney

OK, so it sucks we lost in OT vs Minny yesterday in the Big Ten tourney. Not having Chris Allen hurt more than the ES thought on the offense, not so much on defense. The Spartans lost that game with a few mistakes at the very end of regulation, even though they had turned that defensive intensity to broiling point. Letting Joseph nail the three was brutal, but the missed layup by Kebler (talk about him in a minute) and the last play with Lucas driving and not getting a shot off... well, so be it. Still, the ES figured we'd sink 'em, but the missed FTs by Morgan and Lucas in OT -- both visibly gassed -- told the tale. A surprise, but a hard fought and physical game. With Allen, that game was a W. Morgan was a BEAST, his best game of the year...

OK, the story continues... then today Minny goes out and stomps on Purdue by 27 - my god - 69-42, just a crushing win.

The lineup last night at crunch time was, well, weird. Izzo puts in Kebler (he had 20 minutes) and Nix... sure we dropped a Minny 10 point lead to zero. But we needed points after getting back to square one and both Morgan and Lucas were exhausted. Shit, Summers was in the doghouse the whole second half. Kebler is a very very good defensive player, esp. as a walk on. But, when on the break and the dish from Lucas, he just couldn't get it done on offense... and the TO was critical.

It makes one wonder the extent that Izzo values the Big Ten tourney. These guys went through a brutish schedule and cliched a share of the regular season... and then the best players aren't in on crunch time in the tourney? The ES figures Izzo is saving legs for the NCAAs, and trying to skate by with playing around with lineups... almost like a hockey coach playing with his lines.

Morgan went freaking nuts on Friday nite, it is too bad it was for naught. But, methinks these guys are just fine, esp. if Allen comes back watch out. Remember, we clamped down on Minny the last 7 minutes of regulation and completely shut them down. and, then they turn around and beat Purdue by 27??? We ain't so bad, and we know what we have. Defense wins championships. Bring on the NCAAs, and we welcome any chumps from Ann Arbor to join on the bandwagon.

MSU will likely be a #4 seed in the tournament, esp. with all these other teams falling early. But, if you take Bracketology today, I'd take it... we'd run the region.
